File Formats

We prefer output ready PDFs. We can accept files from either MAC or PC in the following formats: Quark Xpress, PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, InDesign, Microsoft Word, and Write2Print Templates. Please do not downsample or compress anything. When sending Quark or Pagemaker files, make sure all linked graphics are included, don’t embed graphics in the file. Also include copies of all fonts used.

Graphic and Layout Requirements

All bitmap or line art images should be sized at 600dpi and sized at 100% in the layout. Grayscale and color images should be set at 300dpi and sized at 100% in the layout. Color files should be saved as CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) and 300dpi. If the graphics you have are less than 300dpi please let us know when submitting your job so that it will not be held up in preflight.

If you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your system, creating a Press-Ready PDF from virtually any application is very easy.

Adobe Creative Suite Applications:

From Photoshop and Illustrator:
To convert your file to PDF, Go to the EDIT drop-down menu and select Adobe PDF Presets, then select [High Quality Print] (This setting insures that all fonts are embedded and images are not downsampled.) Then simply select Save As in the File menu and choose Adobe PDF from the File Type menu.

From InDesign:
The process is the same as above except you will find the Adobe PDF Presets under the File menu.

From any other application including Quark Xpress and Microsoft Word:
Go to the File menu and select Print.  In the Printer box, select Adobe PDF instead of your usual printer. In the third box that normally says Copies and Pages, select PDF Options. Choose High Quality Print from the box labeled Adobe PDF Settings. A Save To File menu will pop up to allow you to name and save your PDF.

We highly recommend that you use Adobe Acrobat, but if you don't have Acrobat installed there are other PDF printer drivers that will save your file as a PDF.  However, we can't guarantee the output of any third-party software.

Output Ready PDFs

These are files that need no extra work. They are uploaded as 2 seperate files -- complete cover and complete text. The text is sized and cropped correctly and the cover is sized with the proper bleed and spine calculation. If your files are not output ready you may incur extra setup costs and/or delays in your project.

Text Layout

Text files should be submitted as single page documents not reader spreads. A single text file is preferred, sending in multiple text files that require extra work may incur extra costs. We print using 85 lines per inch line screen. Our grayscale images range from 15% to 85% (anything less than 15 fades to white, over 85 fades to black). If items bleed (go to the edge of the page) the entire file must be set up with .125 inches bleed on each side. Example 6x9 book with bleed should be submitted as 6.25x9.25. Margins vary for every book, we need at leaset .5 inches on each side, however find the margins that suit your book.

Soft Cover/Perfect Bound Layout

Covers should be submitted at 300dpi using CMYK colors. Using RGB or Pantone colors can produce color shifts when printed. Covers need to have .125 inches of bleed on each side. We prefer to receive the cover as a single file but can assemble if needed. Color matching to a hard copy is possible but may incur additional charges.

BleedTrimSafety Zone
Anything that is intented to go to the edge of the paper must Bleed, or extend, .125 inches beyond the trim on each side, or you run the risk of there being a white line on the cover. Trim is the size the cover will be cut to, anything outside the trim will be cut off. The Safety Zone is .125 inches smaller than the trim, anything outside the safety zone may be to close to the trim and appear crowded when cut.

Spine Calculation

To calculate the spine take the number of pages, divided by two, multiply by the sheet thickness then add .034.

Example: 300 pages of 50# paper (300/2) x 00.41 + .034 = .649 inches Spine Width
